When is the next FIFA World Cup?
The next FIFA World Cup will be held in 2030 in Morocco, Portugal and Spain, with Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay hosting one centenary match each. The 2030 World Cup will be played across three continents and six nations.
Matches will be hosted in South America in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay, with the opening matches held in Morocco, Spain and Portugal.
The special centenary matches in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay which were the cradle of the World Cup will be held on June 8 or 9, 2030. The opening matches in Morocco, Spain and Portugal (North Africa and Western Europe) will be held on June 13 or June 14, 2030, the World Cup finals draw will be on July 21, 2030. The FIFA World Cup 2030 will be held in six countries across three continents. Morocco, Portugal and Spain will host the majority of the games, while in Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay, where the FIFA World Cup was born, the tournament will kick-off with centenary matches.
How Does the FIFA World Cup Work?
The FIFA World Cup is an international football tournament that involves various countries around the world. Unlike any club tournaments such as Manchester United playing Barcelona or Real Madrid versus Bayern Munich players, every match involves countries instead of clubs.
Each competition is played once every four years. Long before the main part of the tournament itself is underway the national teams within the confederations compete each other and find ways to be in a team during the proper World Cup. The number of teams qualifying from each continent or confederation will vary based on the criteria for qualification that is unique to that World Cup competition.
World Cup Qualification
Qualification starts years before the actual main tournament. The various nations of each confederation are segregated into different tournaments and play against their own respective regions. The federations of each football confederation are as follows: UEFA, CONMEBOL, CAF, AFC, CONCACAF, and OFC.
Qualification games are not just simple games but if a country is lucky enough it can be decided based on a playoff or a position in the group stage or other similar situations.
An obvious case for countries getting through to automatic qualification is based on if they are host countries in most cases. Even with World Cups with two and three hosting countries automatic qualification may occur based on specific parameters decided before the competition begins.
Group Stage
After teams have been deemed to have qualified their names go into groups when they begin playing the competition proper. Each World Cup competition differs in the number of teams that compete along with how they are divided into groups.
For the 2026 World Cup there will be 48 teams for this first ever competition to adopt the extended structure. FIFA officials will draw 12 different groups that will contain a four-team set. Two teams will then advance from each of the twelve groups, the eight best third place team will earn automatic qualification along with the top two from each group creating 32 further teams progressing to the knockout stage and the next round of the tournament.
In this phase players get three points for each game they win, one for the draw, and zero for a lost game after a team has played each other within their respective groups once and also each tied result within each group having a specific ranking rule applied and following it up according to whatever tie breakers established.
Knockout Stage
The following knockout stage involves less league table focus. If countries get knocked out then they won't progress onto their next stage of competition and will face defeat on most situations. With 32 teams there are 32 matches to be played, ranging from the Round of 32 to the semi finals where a final awaits with just two competitors in.
A typical knock out stage match consists of a full ninety minutes to play in if nothing happens then there will be a 30-minute period of extra time, then an addition period of a penalty shootout and depending on who can successfully score on the penalty spot the game will have a determined outcome.
This will occur until only two teams are left for the ultimate game, The final!
The World Cup Final
When just two countries are left competing to be crowned the greatest in the world, all focus will be centered on these two finalists in a final match that will create history to one or two nation. As with previous matches of a knockout nature, a draw after ninety minutes will result in 30 minutes extra time and following this will be the winner determined through a penalty shootout if need be. Winner of this event will have the FIFA World Cup trophy lifted in the air along with eternal recognition as being champions of the world until 2030's tournament!
How long does the World Cup last?
The FIFA World Cup usually goes for several weeks when starting up and there always a schedule drawn up for when games are set to take place at. Depending on how many games they plan to include there can be hundreds and even thousands of games played over that course to determine a champion. The FIFA World Cup matches start in mid-June and can end the latest in mid-July based on the calendar and when the finals match is scheduled to be played. But with so many teams for 2026, 2030 and onward you can bet on it extending out into that latter half.
Why do countries qualify for the world cup?
There simply isn't room to accommodate so many international teams that join FIFA. To do this effectively so every country had a fair opportunity so some can fight for bragging rights. So nations must find ways through confederational qualifying to find themselves earning and taking advantage of what chances are available.
Without this it would literally impossible with the vast amounts of teams available today to compete and give every nation the appropriate coverage to prepare its teams.
But when the time is ready you already have to be on the path to make a team well prepared and not start after the qualifications begin.
What happens after a team gets eliminated during the world cup?
In a knockout stages for example all the work and effort will end with loss if an eventuality of missing and not entering the football net or what is also known as goal happens to the score then its game over. This is what can be summed as a bad luck that causes countries to be eliminated. The winning nation goes to the next level and the losers team will be left watching at home what they couldn't quite earn.
How is the World Cup Winner determined?
The final that usually involves both strong teams which have played their way to the stage, that match determines the world champion after 90 minutes is played and possibly followed by 30 minutes of extra time where you really would have to question yourself after a tight match as to whether the winner will have enough energy for a long day. If no winner is determined you would see each player have a go of who can be the countries victor that day in taking a penalty to become champions that will hold over there mantel for 4 long years at least before the next champion is crowned by another set of 4 tough years and a long grueling qualification process and main event for teams that look to impress and stand on their nations head above others in the world.
