What is a percentage?
A percentage is a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100. "50%" simply means 50 out of every 100, or one half. Percentages are useful because they let you compare proportions easily, regardless of the actual size of the numbers involved.

The three questions people ask most often are: what is X% of Y (multiply Y by X, then divide by 100); what percentage is X of Y (divide X by Y, then multiply by 100); and what is the percentage change from X to Y (subtract X from Y, divide by X, then multiply by 100).
