What is ovulation?
Ovulation is where a mature egg (ovum) is discharged out of an ovary and is now open to fertilization. It is caused by a sudden increase in the luteinizing hormone (LH) and tends to occur once during a cycle. The egg itself only lasts 12-24 hours post-release, and therefore fertilization has to take place within this time to create a pregnancy.
