Did our calculator solve your problem?

How many days until your holiday, between two contracts or since an event? Counting by hand across months of different lengths is where mistakes creep in.

It counts the exact days, converts them to weeks, months and years, and shows how many fall on working days.

How to use the Days Between Dates Calculator#

  1. Enter the start date. It starts on today. Change it if you need another date.
  2. Enter the end date. Type the day, month and year.
  3. Choose whether to include the end date. Include it if both the first and last day count.

How the count works#

Days between = end date − start date

From 1 March to 15 April is 45 days, because March has 31 days: 30 days left in March after the 1st, plus 15 in April. Counting both end points gives 46. The calculator does this for you, including leap years.

Working days and weekends#

Working days are counted as Monday to Friday. Public holidays aren’t removed, because they differ by country and year, so subtract them yourself for a contract or deadline. A span of exactly four weeks always contains 20 working days and 8 weekend days.

Include the end date or not#

Both answers are right for different uses. The gap between two dates normally leaves out the end date. A hotel stay of 1 to 4 June is 3 nights, but 4 calendar days. Use the switch above for the case you need. To work out how old someone is, try the age calculator.

Practical uses, with real numbers#

The calculator earns its keep when a rule is written in days. A common one is the 90 days a visitor may stay in the Schengen area in any 180-day period. Another is a 30, 60 or 90 day notice period in a contract, which counts from the date you give notice. A product warranty, a returns window and a probation period all work the same way. Count from the day after the start unless the rules say otherwise.

A 90-day notice given on 23 October 2026 ends on 21 January 2027, and the 30-day return window on a purchase made on 1 March runs to 31 March.

Leap years and long spans#

A normal year has 365 days and a leap year has 366, so spans that cross 29 February are a day longer. 2028 is the next leap year. From 1 January 2027 to 1 January 2029 is 731 days, not 730. For spans over a year the calculator also shows years, months and days, which is how you would say it aloud.

Tips for avoiding off-by-one mistakes#

Decide first whether the end date is included. Hotels count nights, so a stay from the 1st to the 4th is three nights. Event organisers count days, so the same dates are four days. Write the rule down. If two people get different answers, the cause is usually that one counted both end points and the other did not.

Common questions answered by a date gap#

  • How many days until a deadline, a flight or an exam?
  • How long have we been together, or since I started a job?
  • How many working days does a 30-day notice period contain?
  • How many weeks are there until a baby’s due date? A pregnancy is about 280 days from the last period.
  • How long is a loan term or a rental lease between its start and end dates?

For birthdays and ages, the age calculator is a better fit, and for the time left to a holiday, the Christmas countdown runs to the second.

Frequently asked questions#

Subtract the earlier date from the later one. The calculator accounts for month lengths and leap years.

Only if you turn on that option.

No. Only weekends are removed, so subtract holidays yourself.

No. If the end date is earlier, the calculator swaps them and tells you.

It shows the total days and, separately, how many are working days, counted as Monday to Friday. It does not remove public holidays, because these vary by country and region, so subtract them yourself if you need an exact working-day figure for a contract or a deadline.

Count the Monday to Friday days in the span. In a span of exactly four weeks there are 20 working days. Then subtract any public holidays that fall on weekdays, since those depend on your country. The calculator shows working days automatically, but does not remove holidays, so you can adjust for them by hand.
