To turn a decimal into a percentage, multiply it by 100 and add a percent sign. For example, 0.45 becomes 45%, and 1.2 becomes 120%. Multiplying by 100 is the same as moving the decimal point two places to the right.
How do you convert a percent to a decimal?
To go the other way, divide the percentage by 100, which is the same as moving the decimal point two places to the left. So 45% becomes 0.45, and 120% becomes 1.2.
Why convert between decimals and percentages?
Percentages are easier to interpret at a glance — "45%" reads more naturally than "0.45" — but decimals are what most formulas and spreadsheet calculations actually use behind the scenes, for example when calculating interest, discounts, or statistical probabilities.
