History of Coin Flipping
One of the most ancient and the simplest forms of human decision making is coin flipping. Even before the advent of computers, apps or even written guidelines, human beings required an expeditious and just way of resolving conflicts, assigning side or even determining who has first move. Marked stones, sticks or shell were frequently used by ancient civilizations but when coins were invented, it was the best tool: small, durable, and two-sided.
The Romans used a kind of game called navia aut caput or "ship or head" the winner of which was decided by the face of the coin. Both kids and adults rolled dice to pay off bets, play dice or make hasty judgments. The finding of the same concept was termed in cross and pile in medieval England, and the almost equivalent cara o sello in Spanish, meaning face or seal. Overall, the principle was the same: a direct answer to a question could be solved in a few seconds after only one simple flip.
Coin flips remain widespread even nowadays. They are used in sports to determine who begins a game, in friendship situations to resolve minor disputes and in normal everyday situations where people are not able to select two options and thus they turn to the coin. Even the coin flipping has been analyzed by scientists and it proves to be very near a 50/50 opportunity but slightest bias may be detected in relation to how you are flipping it.
Even after centuries of time, the coin toss is still amazing in its simplicity. No fancy or great plan of action, it is just a scrap of metal and a flick of the thumb and the excitement of seeing it fall. It reminds one that there are just times when the most right decisions to make are left to chance.
